AGENDA REPORT
DATE: January 13, 2025
TO: City Commission
FROM: Bill McDaniel, City Manager
SUBJECT: Existing Solid Waste and Utilities Buildings Demolition Plan
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
On September 25, 2023, the City Commission approved a construction contract for the new Solid Waste and Utilities facility. The project is estimated to be completed by March 2025. Solid Waste and Utilities will relocate operations from the existing building at 1802 Spooner Drive to a new facility just South of the current building, along with the Environmental Compliance division at 705 N. Alexander Street.
After the transition, the existing buildings will be demolished, and a gravel parking area will be constructed to serve as overflow parking for the new building. Additionally, the existing building houses communications equipment for a communication tower situated in a fenced site at the Southwest corner of the building, which will need to be relocated prior to demolition. The existing communication tower is critical for all communication between the water treatment plants, lift stations, and the water reclamation facility. This relocation is required before the demolition of the existing building.
Using the City's continuing contracts for engineering services, staff developed an Engineering Work Order (EWO) with RK&K. The scope of work includes surveying, preparing the demolition plan, obtaining permits, and providing bidding support. Due to the age of the buildings, a pre-demolition survey is necessary to identify disposal requirements for materials and ensure the proper abandonment of existing utilities.
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City Commission authorize the City Manager to execute the engineering work order with RK&K for $98,860 to prepare the demolition plan of existing Solid Waste and Utilities Buildings.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Funds are available in the Water/Sewer Fund, CIP # UM021-IMPLMT302 and the Solid Waste Fund, CIP # UM021-IMPLMT305 and costs will be shared.
