DATE:                                          September 28, 2026

TO:                                          City Commission

FROM:                                          Bill McDaniel, City Manager

SUBJECT:                     Adopting an ordinance to amend the City Charter regarding changing the

date of regular municipal elections to avoid Memorial Day conflict

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

During the last municipal election, the voting period for the second regular election fell during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Sections 166.021(4) and 100.3605, Florida Statutes grant the City Commission authority to change its municipal election dates via ordinance without a referendum. The ordinance changes the date of the first regular election to the first Tuesday after the last Monday in March, and changes the date of the second regular (run-off) election to the third Tuesday in May. The ordinance avoids any potential conflict with the Memorial Day holiday weekend

RECOMMENDATION:

That the City Commission adopt an ordinance approving changing the dates of regular municipal elections.

FISCAL IMPACT:

None.
